Book Club !
At the beginning of the year, during one of our English periods, we were discussing how a book could have a huge impact on people’s lives, affect their professional careers and change the course they embark on. In this context, Miss Madhoun asked us to talk about books that have influenced us […]. I personally have always been a bookworm. Inspired by my mom, who founded a book club with a group of friends 10 years ago, I have always wanted to be a part of one myself. With that in mind, I talked about the idea to Miss Madhoun, who urged me to write a proposal. A week later, I suggested it to my classmates and recommended they join. Many were enthusiastic. Other teachers were too. We then decided upon our first book: 1984 by George Orwell. A month later, our first meeting took place on the 6th of November. Miss Najjar received us for “our very first book-discussing, junk-eating, something-drinking, fun-having meeting.” The meeting, which screened the most committed readers, proceeded even better than expected! With our very own philosopher, Mr. Caponis, our two favorite English teachers, Miss Madhoun and Miss Najjar, and delectable cookies and brownies baked by Naël, we were able to discuss in depth many different philosophical questions and ideas that the book pinpointed. Overall, the book club turned out to be positive in many aspects: while we read and expand our knowledge, as well as vary our ways of thinking through other readers’ ideas, it has made us strengthen and even form new bonds between us relying on one common hobby: book reading. Our upcoming book is entitled A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, and the one to follow is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Our goal is to read as many books as possible before the end of the year.
